Whangamata is only 30 minutes south of
Pauanui
, probably best known for its great surfing breaks and swimming beach, it has a lively town centre and is host the annual Beach Hop, a celebration of the 50s and 60s culture and cars.
Tairua a further 30 minutes north of Pauanui is easily recognised by the twin peaks of Mt Paku which guard the harbour entrance and provide a stunning view from the Coromandel Forest Park to the Alderman Islands off shore.
Only a 40 minute car ride from Pauanui is Hahei, another small beachside town boasting a safe swimming beach, boutique shops and cafes. Two local breweries, a vineyard and a Macadamia Orchard are all within a short driving distance and provide a taste of local flavours. Hahei is home to the famous Cathedral Cove one of the “must visit” sites on the Coromandel. Accessible only by boat or foot, the 35 minute walk provides stunning views across the Te Whanganui-A-Hei marine reserve.
Just a little further out of Hahei is another “must visit” - hot water beach, where 2 hours either side of the low tide, you can dig a hole in the sand and soak in the hot water spring!
Whitianga is the eastern Peninsula’s main hub and is 1 hour north from Pauanui. A busy little seaside town with major banks and supermarket chains, a number of boat and tour operators depart from the Whitianga wharf.
Thames is located on the western coast of the Peninsula and is a historical town from gold mining to kauri logging. Thames also is just down river from the Kaueranga Valley which provides many popular walks in the foothills of the valley, but none as popular as The Pinnancles walk, easily rated as one of New Zealand’s most popular overnight walks. Book ahead as the DoC hut is often booked well in advance.
